No. Bombajom Photos works with any external hard drive or SSD that your phone's host device (a PC, Mac, router with USB storage, or NAS) can share as a network folder. The drives listed here are popular models we've tested directly. Any brand's portable HDD or SSD will work just as well.
For a drive that lives on your desk or in a drawer, an HDD gives you more storage per dollar: 4 TB for around $90. An SSD is faster and more portable, which matters if you also carry the drive with you. Since Bombajom Photos syncs over your local network rather than direct USB, the speed difference rarely matters in practice. Start with an HDD if budget is a concern; upgrade to SSD later if you want something more compact.
A rough guide: a typical smartphone photo is 4–6 MB (HEIC/JPEG) and a video is 50–200 MB per minute. 1 TB comfortably holds around 150,000–200,000 photos, or about 10 years of typical shooting. For a family backing up multiple phones, aim for at least 2 TB, and prefer 4 TB if you shoot a lot of video. It's always better to buy slightly more than you think you need. Drives fill up faster than expected.
Absolutely. A NAS (Synology, QNAP, TerraMaster, TrueNAS, etc.) is the most capable option: it stays on 24/7, supports multiple users, and can hold many terabytes. Bombajom Photos works with any NAS that supports standard file sharing. Check the NAS setup guide for step-by-step instructions.

Alternatively, plug it into a Windows or Mac computer that you leave on, enable file sharing, and point Bombajom Photos to that shared folder.
